Firmament Flambeau

Posted by Rick (Toronto, Canada) on 21 June 2012 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

I don't know... what do you title a city shot that has a sky behind it like this? The buildings almost looked superimposed upon the wild dervish of evening colours.

k@ from Paris, France

Like a sting piercing the pink ceiling. Very nice & surreal skyline, like in a sci-fi movie.

21 Jun 2012 6:39am

@k@: I like the sci-fi analogy, Karine. This cloud dance looks that way to me, too. Cheers!

SalSa from Tehran, Iran

La beauté inévitable d'un ciel de la ville

21 Jun 2012 6:45am

@SalSa: Yes, rare is the sky that doesn't make a city below it more tolerable.

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

It's a terrific shot, great skyline Rick.

21 Jun 2012 6:50am

@Curly: Thanks, Curly. It looks much more dramatic and pretty from the lake, but my balcony is fixed into place!

Ronnie 2¢ from Atlantic Shores, United Kingdom

Their scale is as nothing compared to the sky beyond . . a fabulous shot.

21 Jun 2012 7:06am

@Ronnie 2¢: Those bank towers are monsters when viewed from street level, and yet as you say, they are temporary manmade dwarfs beneath the ever changing sky. Thanks, Ronnie. Be careful with that gargantuan coffee mug of yours!

Doug from Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom

Superb composition Rick

21 Jun 2012 8:39am

@Doug: My thanks for the visit and comment, Doug. Have a great upcoming weekend.

Gérard Beullac from Paris, France

I like -also- the one window with a light, in the building at the right.

21 Jun 2012 8:40am

@Gérard Beullac: Yes, me too. That is one of many squat low rise buildings from the 40s, filled with character and characters ;-)

Martine from bousval, Belgium

Superbe ce coucher de soleil!!!! j'aime la composition!

21 Jun 2012 9:17am

@Martine: Merci beaucoup, Martine.

Thea from Leeuwarden, Netherlands

Wow..what a view,and what a great sky ! Really a fantástic shot Rick !

21 Jun 2012 9:18am

@Thea: I have a nice panorama that moves from this financial district across downtown to the north, and must sooner or later acquire a proper lens to take it all in. I love the skies here in southern Ontario, and since I don't have mountains or a lot of personal space in the city life, those skies play an important role for me. Thanks, Thea.

Tinx from Kuressaare, Estonia

Well done!

21 Jun 2012 9:49am

@Tinx: Thank you.

Phil from Sausset les Pins, France

You makes the city pretty ! Wonderful and incredible shot ! As Gerard il like that kind of candle o, the right , Phil

21 Jun 2012 9:51am

@Phil: The sky shows are of an endless and unpredictable variety, and I love that. Thanks for the nice feedback, Phil.

Stephen from Canberra, Australia

Incredibly futuristic. In your next shot I expect to see Bladerunner-esque capsules darting around the skyline! The dots of light and detail on the skyscrapers create a stunning impact with this blazing sky backdrop. And the CN Tower is the perfect focal point here, Rick.

21 Jun 2012 9:54am

@Stephen: That ubiquitous tower was built for a 200 year lifespan, and it dominates basically any view of downtown. For many years I despised its ugly bland grey exterior, and it once had an old faded Pepsi logo on its restaurant level (at 1200 feet)... these days they have it lit up in colourful fun ways during the evenings, and that helps my eyes when they take in the omnipresent needle. I sure wish I had a next shot with those Ridley Scott capsules... but alas...

grouser from Ludlow, United Kingdom

Great spacey feel Rick. That needle has a syringe like quality searching for a vein in the sky :0

21 Jun 2012 10:26am

@grouser: Maybe that is how the term "shooting up" began?

Universe from Tehran, Iran

Spectacular image & a very good composition. Have a lovely day & Good luck !!

21 Jun 2012 12:12pm

@Universe: thanks

B.Sully from Surf City, United States

haha, I like yours - This definitely looks unreal! Great shot, what a view! :)

21 Jun 2012 1:03pm

@B.Sully: I remember a winter afternoon when a huge sun dog appeared above the city, and I was out running errands, wishing I had my camera with me. I rushed home and it had vanished by the time I got there. Sure would have been a cool and surreal image. Thanks for the comment :)

Lewis from Ljouwert, Netherlands

Great shot, fierce movement in the sky

21 Jun 2012 2:00pm

@Lewis: Thanks, Lewis. The sky went from orange inferno into this pink and purple swirl, all within a half hour. The camera clicked away happily...

Slackwater - Don from Spokane, United States

A gorgeous sky behind this interesting city skyline. Top flight sky shot.

21 Jun 2012 2:50pm

@Slackwater - Don: I would vastly prefer a meadow or tree covered mountain beneath that sky, but I'll settle for what I was presented with :-) - thanks, Don.

Mhelene from Paris, France

fabulous !! I could name it "Nature and men ?

21 Jun 2012 2:52pm

@Mhelene: Thanks, and yes that would be a good title.

Irene from San Francisco, United States

This sky shot is beautiful ! It looks as though the clouds are merging in the background. Great photo !!!

21 Jun 2012 4:01pm

@Irene: I see these types of swirling rising cloud formations from time to time, and call them "genie clouds"... love 'em, and am glad you like them too!

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

I would call it beautiful! :-) A great skyline indeed with such dramatic color behind what looks like a monochromatic skyline. Beautifully framed and captured!

21 Jun 2012 4:21pm

@Steven: The fading sunlight gives that nice reduction in saturation around the buildings, but really makes the cloud colors pop... I love a free show like this. Thanks, Steven.

Phil Morris from Saskatoon, Toronto, Canada

Night Striations. A magnificent monent, with the sky ablaze with colored bolts of light,
very beautiful photo rick, sometimes that just works when everything else at naming
it fails !~

21 Jun 2012 4:44pm

@Phil Morris: "Striations" is such a quality word. Perhaps my title should have been "wordless (irony)", along the lines of how "No Name" grocery store products are still nonetheless named! :-) , thanks Phil and please go get that amazing television that you featured today and add it to your collection !

Judy aka L@dybug from Brooksville, FL, United States

The only thing better would be three or four shots stitched together so we would be surrounded by the colors as you were when you took these! Beautiful, Rick!

21 Jun 2012 6:09pm

@Judy aka L@dybug: I sure wish I could share the whole view just as I saw it. Thanks for having a look, Judy.

Florence from Paris, France

I definitely agree with Karine Rick, truly sci-fi ! The city of the future and a surreal sky ! Beautiful.

21 Jun 2012 7:19pm

@Florence: As I type this reply, the skies are clouding over in a hurry as an evening of thunder and lightning prepares to arrive. I have the tripod set up and am ready! Cheers, dear Florence.

RBL from Oxford, United States

Beautiful city scene and amazing colors in the sky ~ fantastic capture!

21 Jun 2012 7:21pm

@RBL: Thanks a lot!

LauraS from Chico, United States

Yeah, like did you Photoshop that sky in behind the cityscape, or what? It is too incredible to be real! Fantastic, really!

21 Jun 2012 7:50pm

@LauraS: Ha ha... even if I had the software and know-how, I wouldn't dare hoodwink my brother and sister Am3-ers! Thanks for looking :)

franz from Baden, Austria

this is brilliant, rick, surely one of your best! the combination of this wild sky and this impressive skyline looks almost like a photo-montage !!!

21 Jun 2012 8:15pm

@franz: High praise from an esteemed Aminus friend : many thanks!

Baldwin VW from Bejuma, Venezuela

These gorgeous sky colors highlight the amazing city skyline !!! Excellent photo ...

21 Jun 2012 8:43pm

@Baldwin VW: Thanks for those kind words.

john4jack from Corvallis, Oregon, United States

fabulous!!

21 Jun 2012 10:35pm

@john4jack: Right on, Jack :)

Denny Jump Photo from Easton, PA, United States

Truly beautiful, Rick. I cal it beautiful. You know, I REALLY like the reflections of this gorgeous sky coming off that smallest of buikdingd- the glassy one that looks more like a house! That really stands out, I think...Great stuff!!

21 Jun 2012 10:49pm

@Denny Jump Photo: Great feedback, my friend; thanks! Those taller towers are so huge, the one that you refer to is actually about 400 feet tall, ha ha... I'm not a big fan of a lot of the newer towers going up (the tall one four to the left of the CN Tower is Trump's new building) but sometimes they make them pretty with unusual exterior finishes.

Denny Jump Photo from Easton, PA, United States

Oh yah, I forgot to say how much I truly love the Canadian Tower!! That and the Space Needle are head and shoulders above all others :-)

21 Jun 2012 10:51pm

@Denny Jump Photo: Yeah, I like Seattle's needle too. The CN Tower recently added a new feature where people can walk around it, OUTSIDE, with just an angled netting/fencing to protect them from a very very far fallllllll ..... anything to keep those tourist bucks coming in ;-)

Phil Morris from Saskatoon, Toronto, Canada

Yes, right now I have found a spaceship that was designed by the same genius that
designed the enterprise, that reminds me I must tell Jason !~

21 Jun 2012 11:10pm

@Phil Morris: Wow, really? Jason's gonna flip out :-)

DarkElf from Perth, Australia

fantastic skyline with great looking sky and clouds - magical colour tone that make for a superb backdrop!

22 Jun 2012 1:56am

@DarkElf: Thanks very much!

Francisco Romero from Carbajal de la Legua, Spain

It certainly is a gorgeous image that it is a pleasure to behold.

22 Jun 2012 6:10am

Arash from Brisbane, Australia

Nice composition and beautiful colors.

22 Jun 2012 10:15am

Skyriani from Nelson, New Zealand

Wild dervish of a sky....your description is as great as the image.
Here's a sister skyline/image.
