flame thrower

Posted by Rick (Toronto, Canada) on 17 July 2012 in Documentary & Street and Portfolio.

Doug from Burnham-on-Sea, United Kingdom

Wow, superb capture Rick, it looks like a good performance

17 Jul 2012 6:45am

@Doug: This was a winter solstice celebration on a bitterly cold night. So cold a lot of the brass playing musicians called off their participation. I'll return again this year for more. Thanks for looking, Doug.

l'angevine from France

intéressant ce effet de mouvement circulaire

17 Jul 2012 7:30am

@l'angevine: Merci.

Stephen from Canberra, Australia

Exhilarating mix of fire and motion. Amazing tag the artist draws in flame!

17 Jul 2012 8:19am

@Stephen: Her back is turned here as she dances and spins away, but the flame trajectory continues through the shutter. I love cameras! So awesome to be able to see beyond what the actual moment provides our senses. Many thanks, Stephen.

Olivier Paillet from toulouse, France

Great catch ! Love the result ! Well done !

17 Jul 2012 8:34am

@Olivier Paillet: Thank you, Olivier :-)

Phil from Sausset les Pins, France

Lovely caught ! A really nice composition , Phil

17 Jul 2012 9:03am

@Phil: Thanks, Phil. I love your shot for today.

Phil Morris from Saskatoon, Toronto, Canada

Amazing and magical, to me a split second before everyone runs for their lives, the fire
takes a carnival ride upside down turn, which makes this a mind blogging photo !~

17 Jul 2012 9:16am

@Phil Morris: Yeah, I like your riff on it! Thanks for the compliment, always. And... watch the skies!

Anthony Morgan Lambert from Bielefeld,Old West Wales boy, Germany

A very nice long exposure,brilliant !!

17 Jul 2012 10:17am

@Anthony Morgan Lambert: Glad you like it, and thanks!

Martine from bousval, Belgium

Wouhaaaaaaaaaaaa!! bravo à toi!!! c'est superbe!!!!!

17 Jul 2012 10:29am

@Martine: Merci ! :-))

Williams from East LaHave, Nova Scotia, Canada

OH YEAH! I love this, a torrent of flying flame. Great show Rick.

17 Jul 2012 11:04am

@Williams: I love that word, "torrent", and maybe it's because this city is in dire need of a good one to cool it all down. Man, it's scorching today! Cheers, Paul.

Jason Politte from Conway, AR, United States

Oh wow, that's fantastic, Rick. Love the action not only with the flame but throughout the shot. Well done!

17 Jul 2012 11:12am

@Jason Politte: There is a wonderful sense of joy and community at these December solstice gatherings. Thanks a bunch, Jason.

Joyce from Montana, United States

What an amazing shot of a performer who loves to amaze the public. You have frozen fire!

17 Jul 2012 12:09pm

@Joyce: I was still very much the DSLR rookie for this solstice celebration, and want to go back again with the added know-how to make better images of this kind of thing. Thanks, J.

Josh from New York, United States

great slow shutter

17 Jul 2012 2:02pm

@Josh: Cheers, Josh.

Slackwater - Don from Spokane, United States

A spectacular capture. I can't imagine how the flame-thrower did this.

17 Jul 2012 2:50pm

@Slackwater - Don: She was twirling a flaming baton and I left the shutter open for a second or so. Thanks, Don.

mosleh from kurdestan_baneh, Iran

perfect :)

17 Jul 2012 2:52pm

@mosleh: Kind of you; thanks.

Sue-Ann from Quebec, Canada

superb, did you process, it cannot be real...

17 Jul 2012 3:44pm

@Sue-Ann: It's real; just a few seconds of drag on the exposure time to get the flame to extend as the fire dancer twirled around, and focus on the flame only, plus the movement of my camera made everyone around a little blurry which really added to the focal point being that looping baton of fire. Lots of fun to play with cameras! This was a few winters ago in Kensington Market where they celebrate the December solstice. Thanks for the comment!

franz from Baden, Austria

brilliant capture and frame !!! did anyone try to negotiate the fiery tunnel ?!?

17 Jul 2012 3:52pm

@franz: Just the Elementals! ;-) - thanks, sir franz !

Phil Morris from Saskatoon, Toronto, Canada

Ok ok ok now I really know what this is - I read about it in around 1980 in all the
papers, this has to be " The Annual Richard Pryor Marathon Run " which was
the funniest thing he ever did and probably his one claim to fame :
" Richard Pryor should have died on June 9, 1980. Early in the evening, out of his
mind on crack cocaine, the comedian covered himself in rum and set it alight. "
So every year I see others pay tribute to this great run and it must be silly tuesday !!

17 Jul 2012 4:30pm

@Phil Morris: I can't believe Toronto likes to call itself a world class city, and we don't have an annual Richard Pryor Marathon Run :( !!! (Silly Tuesday knows no boundary, buddy!)

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

Excellent capture of twirling flame! I love how people are gathered all around it.

17 Jul 2012 4:59pm

@Steven: Thanks !

Phil Morris from Saskatoon, Toronto, Canada

Of course you realize everyone would be running around on fire, he started his by
havng an accident on his stove, while cooking crack !!~

17 Jul 2012 5:01pm

@Phil Morris: Yeah, I remember that incident, and I also wouldn't be surprised by anything that people en masse would be capable of! They'd need fire department supervision, I suppose, putting out flames the minute they start and ruining the event!

Baldwin VW from Bejuma, Venezuela

Outstanding capture of this twirling flame !!! Really impressive and excellent shot ...

17 Jul 2012 5:43pm

@Baldwin VW: Thanks very much :-)

Fantastic and impressive capture, love the flame trail and the rich colors and tones!

17 Jul 2012 7:54pm

@RBL: That low sodium city lighting adds a nice nighttime ambiance on nights like the one shown above. Thanks a lot for dropping by to take a look.

Denny Jump Photo from Easton, PA, United States

This is just phenomenal! I am speechless - how about that? I love the curly cue motion of the flame and tjust thinking about how you had to expose for this really blows my mind - fantastic and brilliant, no, MASTERFUL work Rick...serious !

17 Jul 2012 8:26pm

@Denny Jump Photo: Awww, you generous dude, you ! Thanks for the so kind words, buddy. Hope you're staying cool in this blast furnace of a day.

Judy aka L@dybug from Brooksville, FL, United States

WOW . . . you're a dozen degrees hotter in Toronto than we are here on the west coast of central Florida. Is something crazy, or what?
I love your photo of the flame throwers ... a GREAT capture, Rick.

17 Jul 2012 9:54pm

@Judy aka L@dybug: We get plenty of very hot and humid summer days every year, but this Summer is off to a crazy start, and more seriously we are a city in shock over some disgusting public shootings that have been happening. All the Canadian cliches are melting away this year! Thanks for the kind reaction to the pic, Judy. I'm here waiting for storms to arrive... maybe some more wild lightning photos in the near future.
