I don't quite know what to make of this. Does form follow function here and if so what is the function it is following? They can't be umbrellas for the seating. Are they just there to try and upstage the Italianate architecture beyond? An interesting visual conundrum you capture here Rick, although not one that fills me with enthusiasm :)

@grouser: No enthusiasm for me either; merely a photo opportunity. I don't see how functional this can be and it looks like another example of ugly modernist abomination that by proximity defaces a well preserved mid-1800s heritage structure.
